What is Preventive Dentistry?

It is a philosophy of oral health care that embraces all phases of dentistry. It includes not only the prevention of dental caries and periodontal diseases through the use of proper diet, home care, and regular dental examinations but also includes proper restoration and replacement of teeth, root canal treatment, orthodontic braces, and even the surgical removal of teeth to prevent the spread of infection.

This course is designed to acquaint you with the fundamental concepts of the Preventive Dentistry Program and the clinical and homecare procedures used in administering the program. It also seeks to familiarize you with the technical nomenclature used in the oral examination, prophylaxis, fluoridation, and education of the dental patient. This course consists of 4 lessons:

  • The Preventive Dentistry Program.
  • The Oral Examination in Preventive Dentistry.
  • Oral Prophylaxis.
  • Self-care Procedures.

In 2019, an estimated 53,000 adults (38,140 men and 14,860 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with oral and oropharyngeal cancer. About 13,000 will die. The need for preventive dentistry is readily evident. With the introduction of a more refined diet, modern man has become more susceptible to dental disease. Data indicates that at least 95% of all Americans suffer from dental cavities sometime during their lives and that 90% of all Americans over the age of 35 suffer from some type of periodontal (gum) disease.
